Randakk's Own CBX Master Carb Overhaul Kit

WORLD'S BEST CBX KIT!

Beautifully Restored CBX Carbs by Leon Summers of Los Gatos, CA (using parts from Randakk's)

"Hi Randall, Wanted to say how very happy I am with the CBX carb overhaul kit I recently purchased from you. Your delivery was very prompt - within 2 days from USA to Australia is pretty good!! - and all components of the kit were present, of excellent quality, very well packaged and in very sensible package "groupings" so as to allow this CBX carb 'newbie' to ultimately make sense of it all.

Due this being an "educational project" for me and having to diagnose and fix many niggling problems due to my own inexperience, I had to join the pairs and rack of carbs I would say at least 10-15 times. I believe the fact that the carb rack successfully went apart and together so many times with absolutely no hint of a leak from the rack on the final on-bench leak test speaks volumes for the quality and durability of your product. Excellent product and you can count me in as one very satisfied customer. Keep up the good work. Kind Regards."

I consider CBX carbs to be works of industrial art...truly amazing carbs. Simply stunning examples of very intricate die casting! Here's another Randakk exclusive item designed to help you put your CBX carbs in top working order. My CBX Master Carb Overhaul Kit includes everything you need (and nothing you don't need!) for a comprehensive CBX carb overhaul.

This kit is proprietary to Randakk's...you won't find this available anywhere else at any price. I sourced the best available parts from 3 continents and combined them in a unique combination that represents real value. This kit is appropriate for any 1979 - 1982 CBX with original carbs.

And unlike other kits on the market, my kit even includes those pesky carburetor body side-to-side sealing o-rings that seem to give so much trouble on units that have been parked for awhile (details below).

Note: The round o-rings in each of my Master Kits are made of Viton rather than ordinary nitrile (Buna-N) as found in other aftermarket carb kits. Viton is superior to nitrile in terms of:

  • Heat tolerance (400 degrees F vs. 250 degrees F)
  • Compression set
  • Permeation

Most people are not aware that one good case of severe engine overheating can ruin the carb o-rings found in ordinary kits. My o-rings are the best available! Viton Proof here.

Also, my o-ring sizes are quite precise. They are equivalent to the exact sizes specified by Honda for each fitment. Not "close-enough" sizes as in many of the other aftermarket kits I've evaluated.

Contents of Randakk's CBX Master Carb Overhaul Kit

Also includes 12 high quality panhead screws for securing choke butterfiles

Unlike ordinary aftermarket kits, each Randakk kit provides everything listed for all 6 carbs + other items required for splitting and re-joining the carbs to replace the cross carb fuel transfer tubes as well as the float bowl vent circuits. I even include rebuild kits for the air cut-off valve and accelerator valve. Best of all, I include a terrific manual by my friend Mike Nixon to guide you through the rebuild process...details below.

Only the highest quality items are included. This kit has been thoroughly tested. This collection represents the best value available in the market. Trust me, you will need everything in this kit to do a proper overhaul of your carbs.

Here's what you get:

O-rings:

  • 6 - fuel (idle) mixture screw (2.8 x 1.1 mm)
  • 6 - float bowl drain screw (4.2 x 1.3 mm)
  • 6 - CV Slide Top Limit Plug (6.9 x 1.3 mm)
  • 1 - Carb #3 accelerator pump passage at float bowl (5.0 x 1.3 mm).
  • 12 - Main Fuel Transfer Tubes (5.8 x 2.0 mm)
  • 12 - Accelerator Fuel Transfer Tubes (3.8 x 2.0 mm)
  • 12 - Air Cut-off Circuit Tube Connectors (7.8 x 2.0 mm)

Gaskets - 6 of each:

  • Randakk's exclusive improved float bowl gaskets.
    • Slightly thicker cross section for positive sealing
    • made from high tech material to resist problems associated with oxygenated fuels

Miscellaneous Parts:

  • 1 Air Cutoff Valve Overhaul Kit
  • 1 Accelerator Pump Overhaul Kit
  • 6 idle mixture screw washers
  • 18 float bowl screws (4 x 16 mm)
  • 1 mm cotter pin for accelerator pump linkage - 1 supplied (simple item, but hard to find elsewhere)
  • 6 rubber blanking plugs - cover access to idle fuel jet for '79 carbs only (but supplied in all kits)
  • 12 high quality, plated M3 x 6mm (0.5 pitch) panhead screws for securing choke butterfiles

Special Bonus:

Through an exclusive arrangement, my CBX Master Carb Overhaul Kit is available in a combination with Mike Nixon's brilliant booklet, Cleaning the CBX Carburetor. This 32 page booklet is a must read! Much better explanation and photos than the official Honda Workshop Manual. 130 sharp photos and illustrations! Trust me, you'll be very glad you have this gem. The retail value (with shipping) for this wonderful booklet is $34.55

You will also need to review Mike's detailed "how-to" on renewing the fuel transfer tube and float bowl vent o-rings here.

This booklet alone and other neat CBX Instructional Guides from Mike Nixon are available here at Mike's Book Nook!

I also recommend that you refer to the official Honda Factory Workshop Manual. There is some critical information there on re-joining and aligning the carb bodies to prevent binding of the throttle and choke shafts...very important! You can download and print a shop manual here (scroll down to CBX Technical References).

My Master Kit includes all the o-rings needed for renewing the fuel transfer tubes (main and accelerator) as well as the air cut-off circuit tube connectors.

I also now include 12 high quality, plated M3 x 6mm (0.5 pitch) panhead screws for securing the choke butterfiles. The choke butterflies must be removed during disassembly of CBX carbs to renew the side-to-side transfer o-rings. The staked OEM choke butterfly screws are very difficult to re-use. You will need to use some medium strength Lock-Tite to secure my screws.

Note: No jets or jet needles are supplied with my kits. My experience is that these can normally be cleaned and re-used. Aftermarket needles are not sized as accurately as the OEM needles and may introduce lean / rich problems where none existed. Unless your needles are worn or bent, I recommend re-using them. If you try to buy jet needles from Honda, you'll discover that they are only available as a set which includes the CV slide, cap and jet needle. The price will make you faint! If you need jets, buy aftermarket kits such as those from K&L or spring for the genuine Honda bits.

Also, there are no float valve/seat assemblies in my kit. Many aftermarket rebuild kits include float valve/seat assemblies of dubious quality. In the past, there have been many problems with these aftermarket items. Most of the problems related to the aftermarket float needles being incorrectly sized (too short) resulting in unreliable (or nonexistent) fuel shutoff. Some are OK. I've not included them in this kit, because the rubber tips and seats on the OEM item will last nearly forever and can usually be cleaned and reused. If you decide to reuse your existing float assemblies, be sure to remove and clean the small fuel strainer beneath the float seat!

So, I've left float valve/seat assemblies out of my kit to keep the cost down and give you a choice on what to buy if you think new ones are needed.

If you need new float valve/seat assemblies, you can buy the OEM item and not have a worry. This way you'll also get new fuel inlet screens (the plastic strainers installed below each float valve). The Honda part number is #16011-422-004. You will need to order 6 of these. Or, take a slight gamble and go with aftermarket float valve/seat assemblies which are available at reasonable cost from numerous suppliers. When you use aftermarket float valve/seat assemblies you will need to carefully remove, clean and reuse your existing fuel inlet screens.

My CBX Master Kit includes 106 total pieces (I count the air cutoff overhaul kit and accelerator pump kit as only "1" piece each in my total count even though each actually has a diaphragm, spring, seal, boot, etc.).

Considerable skill is required to install this high quality kit correctly. Since I can't control this important variable, there is no warranty on these. Rest assured that they are of the highest quality materials and workmanship. Each kit has been carefully packed and inspected to ensure that all items are included.

Warning: Please open the package very carefully when it arrives. Many of the parts are very small so take appropriate precautions. If you chose to open the package in the dark over your gravel driveway, after 1 or 12 beers, please don't later complain that you are a "few o-rings short." Seriously, do be careful when you open the package!

CBX "Air Tees" (NOT included in CBX Master Kit)

If you're doing a concours quality CBX carb restoration, you will probably need the so-called "air tees." These are frequently deteriorated and sporadically available from Honda. The "air tees" are the main portion of Honda's "Joint Set D" - part #16036-422-004 (2 required). The current list price for this often "discontinued" item is $28.57 each.

These venting tees are located between carbs #2 & #3 and between carbs #4 & #5.

These aren't super critical from a functional point of view since they are only vent circuits that equalize the carbs to outside atmospheric pressure. But, the tees and hoses help exclude debris and water. They are an item that sharp show judges will look for.

Functional billet aluminum reproductions are available elsewhere, but they do not match the original OEM item perfectly like these do. Plus, mine are available at a more attractive price.

Through a special arrangement, Randakk's is now the exclusive North American outlet for these exquisite reproduction CBX air tees from Arnold Korn of Germany. Made with superior synthetic rubber material and precision workmanship, they are virtually indistinguishable from OEM.

Reproduction "Air Tees" - sold in sets of 2

Note: The normal installation method is to install these "air tees" is when the carbs are split apart for major service. But, it is not absolutely necessary to split the carbs. If you are careful, they will pop on with seal picks and appropriate lubrication. You just curl one side of the tee on then carefully pop the other side on. Excellent lighting and a fair amount of patience is advised. Special thanks to Tony MacNeill (sixofsix) for reminding me of this detail.

Note: I'm selling these in a pair of 2 "air tees."

Price: $41.50 per pair of 2 including US domestic shipping and handling.

Note:

You may also need the 2 "straight air joints" as well (shown below). These are also part of Honda's "Joint Set D" - #16036-422-004 (2 required). These are not included with my reproduction air tees. They can easily be fashioned from suitably-sized 15mm long sections of fuel hose.

These "straight air joints" are located between carbs #1 & #2 and between carbs #5 & #6.

Randakk's CBX Float Pivot Pins (NOT included in CBX Master Kit)

RANDAKK EXCLUSIVE!!! IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANYWHERE ELSE, FROM ANYBODY, AT ANY PRICE UNTIL NOW...THESE ARE NEW!

Up until now, float pins have been available only from Honda as part of a "Float Set" which includes the float. The Honda part number for the CBX float set is: 16013-679-005 which currently lists for $41.10 each. So, to get 6 float pins, you would have to spend $246.60 at full retail!

CBX Float Pivot Pins

Float pins can be a bear to remove. Often they are bent or damaged in the process. Worse, ham-fisted removal efforts unfortunately can result in broken float pivot posts which ruins the whole carb body. Be careful removing these! Liberal and patient soaking with PB Blaster or equivalent is advised before you attempt removal.

Randakk's float pins are designed specifically for the Honda CBX. They are made from from precision machined stainless steel stock to precise dimensions. They are cut to length to very close tolerances and the ends are finished just like OEM.

Be sure to de-burr the float pivot post bores on the carb body before installing these. Make sure the corresponding bores in the floats themselves are free of burrs as well. The float must pivot freely when installed for proper operation.

Note: I'm selling these only in a set of 6 float pins.

Price: $24.75 per set of 6 including US domestic shipping and handling.

CBX Carb Halves "Prepped" Before Rejoining

Note:

The top rack mount plates are on backwards on the carb halves above! The 'scallops' should slope inward - to allow free access to two of the sync screws. When mounted incorrectly as shown above the plates will also "foul" on the carb caps.

This set is long gone, but the plates were corrected when the carb halves were joined. It's hard not to notice the fouling with the caps! I assumed no one would notice this detail when I selected the picture above, but sharped-eyed Dave McMunn did!

So, I've decided to add the red arrow and leave this photo in place as a mini "Tech Tip." The photo below shows the correct placment of the top rack plates.

Dave also correctly points out:

"You may also inform customers that the air 'T's point rearward BELOW the rack mount, not above as shown in lots of photos (elewhere). If you install them above the rack and let them rest in the little scallops, they are in the way to sync the carbs. Most guys rebuilding CBX carbs don't know how they go since most carbs' Ts are missing."

The photo below shows the correct routing of the "Air Tees" and hoses.
