Beautifully Restored GL1000 Carbs by Jouko Tomminen of Lahti, Finland (using parts from Randakk's)
Restored GL1100 Carbs (by Randakk) using Randakk's Master GL1100 Carb Overhaul Kit
Recent Testimonials:
"Thanks for your great products and the extremely helpful information on your website. Using your Master Carb Overhaul Kit and your Tech Tips, I've finally about got my '76 GL dialed in. It idles and runs better than it has in many years. Thanks again."
Todd Brasher - Chelsea, AL
"Randall: Thanks for shipping the GL1000 Master Carb /Overhaul Kit so quickly. This is for a '79 that I received in trade for some computer parts and work. The carbs are in good shape, but probably original. This will be my 3rd time around the barn rebuilding GL carbs, so I have a good idea what I'm in for ,-) FYI - before ordering your Master Kit I reviewed the $9.99 kits available online from another vendor. I ended up ordering your Master Kit instead. Why? Consider: each of their kits is $10, so for all 4 carbs I'd now be at $40. They also get $17.50 for the air cutoff valve, so that's $57.50. Plus, they charge for shipping, so their total is $63+ But, their combo does not include the petcock kit, central plenum gasket, special fuel seals, pucks, cotter pins, plenum bolts or fuel filter as in your Master Kit. Even if the parts in your kit were only "just as good" as the other guy's, your Master Kit is STILL the better deal IMHO."
Doug Rollins - Nampa, ID
"Thanks! Your carburetor kit and on-line advice worked wonders for this bike.....really helped me out. I want to give you all the kudos you're due! The previous owner had really messed things up...even had the air valve installed backwards. It purrs nicely now!"
Dick DeYoung - Oshkosh, WI
"What a difference! I was very impressed with the quick delivery and completeness of the Master Carb Overhaul kit. It had everything that I needed including the missing parts!!! Apparently the previous owner had the carbs serviced/cleaned and didn’t replace the small rubber “bung” passage plug that covers the Idle Jet on one of the carbs. I believe that this was the cause of a very rich condition that would foul a plug in under 50 miles! The bike had sat for about 5 years before I got it and was running very poorly – rough idle, sluggish response and would foul the # 1 plug constantly – all other plugs very textbook colored. Oh yeah, and was getting 25 mpg!
I replaced points, condenser, coils (though maybe I had an intermittent wire), checked that compression was good, valve clearances set correctly, carbs sync’d, even tried a hotter plug in number 1, etc. - I tried everything I could think of before I tackled the carb overhaul - including your “in situ lazy” method a number of times thinking I had a stuck float. You were right, I was way ahead of the game as the carbs were very clean when I opened them up.
After the overhaul (thanks for the Carb Top Service tips) and synchronization it now idles and accelerates smoothly – this is a very fast bike! I am now glad to ride this bike – it’s not fun riding on three cylinders! After 150+ miles, the #1 plug is perfectly colored and I’m now getting 38 mpg.
See the attached picture of the #1 plug before and after the carb overhaul…It’s amazing that a little piece of rubber in the right place can make such a difference!"

Regarding GL1000 carbs, I strongly recommend that you retain the original 4 carb setup. You may be tempted to trash your carbs and go to a single carb conversion. These work well enough, but I don't personally recommend them. Most people who invest in these setups report significant performance "improvements." However, they are comparing their results with their dirty, poorly maintained and malfunctioning original carbs.
In my opinion, the theoretical simplicity advantage of a single carb is offset by:
As these landmark bikes become even more collectible, discriminating buyers are going to pay top dollar for only the most original specimens. Originality is important!
Allow me a little soapbox time. Early GL1000s are routinely criticized for having poor carburetion. The criticism has been repeated so often by so many that it has become accepted as fact. Here is my contrarian view: the early GL1000s have great carburetion setups! My personal '75 GL1000 show bike has flawless, near-linear carburetion…rheostat-like throttle response, no flat spots, starts easily, warms up fast enough and has a decent idle. My carbs are stock except for a few minor tweaks I make on all the carbs I service. I've owned and ridden many bikes. I believe the stock setup on a GL1000, properly maintained and tuned delivers results as good as you can reasonably expect on a 4 cylinder, 4 carb bike of this vintage with this level of performance.
If your carbs are clean (I mean REALLY), all your vacuum hoses are good, your air-cut off valve fresh, choke linkage free, butterfly pivots not worn out, floats set and operating correctly, vacuum pistons free, air and fuel filters fresh and you've synchronized AFTER all other tune-up issues are perfect, you should have excellent results. By the way, all bets are off if you've replaced the OEM exhaust with something else.
Be aware...certain EBAY sellers insinuate that they perform all the proprietary mods I'm famous for. I can assure you that it took many years to develop these special mods and I have not shared my methods with anyone. A casual review of the photos accompanying one recent EBAY ad clearly reveals many "shortcuts" that I would never even consider taking.

Another Randakk exclusive item. This GL1000 Master Carb Overhaul Kit includes everything you need (and nothing you don't need!) for a comprehensive GL1000 carb overhaul. This kit is proprietary to Randakk's...you won't find this available anywhere else at any price. I sourced the best available parts from 3 continents and combined them with my own exclusive items to make this kit possible. This kit is appropriate for any 1975 - 1979 GL1000 with original carbs.
Note: The 28 round o-rings (4 each of 7 sizes detailed below) in each of my Master Kits are made of Viton rather than ordinary nitrile (Buna-N) as found in other aftermarket carb kits. Viton is superior to nitrile in terms of:
Most people are not aware that one good case of severe engine overheating can ruin the carb o-rings found in ordinary kits. My o-rings are the best available!
Also, my o-ring sizes are quite precise. They are equivalent to the exact sizes specified by Honda for each fitment. Not "close-enough" sizes as in many of the other aftermarket kits I've evaluated.
Major Improvement (April 25, 2005): Randakk's Master Carb Overhaul Kit now includes all the rubber parts needed to overhaul the petcock.
Major Improvement (December 9, 2004): I have convinced my Japanese suppliers to correct a long-standing problem which has plagued most GL1000 carb repair kits forever. Specifically, the aftermarket float bowl gaskets in most kits have never fit as well as the OEM items due to imprecisions in the molds used. The main problem in the past has been with poor positioning of the locating tab cut-outs. My manufacturer commissioned new molds which have completely corrected this problem. Randakk's Cycle Shakk now has the world's first supply of these new and improved float gaskets!
GL1000 Master Carb Overhaul Kit
Each kit provides everything listed for all 4 carbs + other items required for splitting and re-joining the plenum plus overhauling the air cut-off valve. Only the highest quality items are included. This kit has been thoroughly tested and approved by the world's leading authority on GL1000 carbs (me). This collection represents the best value available in the market. Trust me, you will need everything in this kit to do a proper overhaul of your carbs.
Here's what you get:
O-rings - 4 of each:
- fuel (idle) mixture screw - 2.8 x 1.9 mm
- float valve assembly - (seat) - 5.7 x 1.3 mm
- float bowl drain screw - 4.47 x 1.78 mm
- primary main jet - 3.2 x 1.1 mm
- secondary main jet - 4.2 x 1.1 mm
- large carb-to-plenum (air) o-ring - 60.0 x 2.1 mm (this one looks "square" on the Honda parts diagram)
- intake manifold - 40.0 x 2.6 mm
Be aware that aftermarket main jets sometimes are not sized properly...the O-ring grooves can be too shallow. This results in the O-ring fit being too snug. "Dress" the jet tower cavities with crocus cloth or similar to remove oxidation and burrs, then use lubricant like vaseline to insert the main jets.
Gaskets - 4 of each:
- float bowl gasket
- air jet cover (kidney shaped gasket)
Special Carb-to-Plenum Fuel Seals - 4 of these:
- Randakk's exclusive carb-to-plenum fuel seals. 4 are provided. See detailed description below.
Special Gasket - 1 of these:
- Randakk's exclusive improved GL1000 plenum gasket.
Special Parts - 4 of these:
- Randakk's exclusive carb "pucks." See detailed description below.
Special Parts
- Randakk's reproduction petcock rebuild kit (See detailed description here):
- Petcock disk
- 2 Petcock-to-fuel tank seals
Miscellaneous Parts:
- Rubber blanking plugs (cover access to idle fuel jet) - 4 supplied
- Air Cutoff Valve Overhaul Kit
- 1 mm cotter pins for linkage - 6 supplied (simple item, but hard to find elsewhere)
- "E-clips" required for '75 linkage - 4 supplied
- 5 special screws and lock washers in 2 lengths to re-join the plenum halves. These are high quality zinc-plated screws...not soft crap like the originals.
- High quality aftermarket fuel filter
My kit includes everything you need to separate and rejoin the plenum: plenum gasket, special carb-to-plenum fuel seals, carb-to-plenum "air seals" as well as 5 high quality screws in the correct lengths. If you don't split the plenum and renew these critical parts during your overhaul, you may have regrets later.
Note: No jets or jet needles are supplied with my kits. My experience is that these can normally be cleaned and re-used. Aftermarket needles are not sized as accurately as the OEM needles and may introduce lean / rich problems where none existed. Unless your needles are worn or bent, I recommend re-using them. If you try to buy jet needles from Honda, you'll discover that they are only available as a set which includes the CV slide, cap and jet needle. The price will make you faint! If you need jets, buy aftermarket kits from a supplier such as Sirius (you'll still need my kit). I have a good supply of used jets if you're just missing a few.
Also, there are no float valve/seat assemblies in my kit. Many aftermarket rebuild kits include float valve/seat assemblies of dubious quality. In the past, there have been many problems with these aftermarket items. Most of the problems related to the aftermarket float needles being incorrectly sized (too short) resulting in unreliable (or non-existent) fuel shut-off. Some are OK. I've not included them in this kit, because the rubber tips and seats on the OEM item will last nearly forever and can usually be cleaned and reused so long as you install a new O-ring which I have included.
So, I've left float valve/seat assemblies out of my kit to keep the cost down and give you a choice on what to buy if you think new ones are needed.
If you decide that you need new float valve/seat assemblies, you can buy the OEM item and not have a worry. This way you'll also get new fuel inlet screens (the plastic strainers installed below each float valve). The Honda part number for the float valve set is 16011-371-014 (supersedes 16011-371-305 which superseded 16011-371-004). It includes the float seat, float needle, O-ring and screen. You will need to order 4 of these. There is no worry about getting the wrong part from Honda. Their system will always supply the correct superseded part regardless of what you request. Or, take a slight gamble and go with aftermarket float valve/seat assemblies which are available at reasonable cost from numerous suppliers. When you use aftermarket float valve/seat assemblies you will need to carefully remove, clean and re-use your existing fuel inlet screens.
I've also included the correct fuel filter to use with a GL1000. It would be a crime to re-do your carbs and not take prudent measures to ensure a pure fuel supply! While you are at it, you should replace your fuel hoses as these can sometimes disintegrate from the inside out and be a source of fuel contamination in the form of small rubber fragments. I recommend that you purchase a length of high quality 1/4" fuel injection hose locally. You will need 3 sections: 1 piece 160 mm long and 2 pieces 150 mm long. The long piece goes from the fuel pump to the carbs...the short pieces go on either side of the fuel filter. Don't forget to flush your fuel pump. Debris can collect here as well.
If you're restoring to a high standard, you will probably prefer the OEM Honda fuel hose sections which come with the correct woven cover. These hose sections are still available from Honda:
#91320-371-000 HOSE, FUEL (5.5X160) 1 required
#91455-371-000 HOSE, FUEL (5.5X150) 2 required
My comprehensive kit represents real value. Compare with these Honda list prices:
Honda "Packing set" #16010-371-004 $47.84 list each (4 required ... 10 pieces in each)...$191.36
Honda "Gasket, Air Chamber" (Plenum Gasket) #16075-371-004...1 required = $28.24
Honda "Filter, Fuel" #16900-371-004...1 required = $20.99
Total for OEM Honda parts (42 individual parts) = $240.59 at list!!!
(Note: In fairness to Honda, their "packing set" contains 1 part that I don't provide...CV carb slide top to carb body plastic "bumper" rings. Honda is the only source I know of for this particular item. However, these last nearly forever. I have lots of good used ones if you happen to lose one.)
My Master Kit includes 69 total pieces (I count the air cutoff overhaul kit as only "1" piece in my total count even though it actually has a diaphragm, spring, 2 o-rings for sealing the air cutoff valve to the plenum + top cover O-ring. Depending on my supplier, the air cutoff kit might also include another special seal you won't use in this application. Also, I don't count the 5 lock washers for the plenum screws in the total part count).
Considerable skill is required to install this high quality kit correctly. Since I can't control this important variable, there is no warranty on these. Rest assured that they are of the highest quality materials and workmanship. Each kit has been carefully packed and inspected to ensure that all items are included.
Warning: Please open the package very carefully when it arrives. Many of the parts are very small so take appropriate precautions. If you chose to open the package in the dark over your gravel driveway, after 1 or 12 beers, please don't later complain that you are a "few o-rings short." Seriously, do be careful when you open the package!

"Hi Randall, I just wanted to let you know my 1200 carburetor project went extremely well. The difference is amazing. My air cutoff valve was definitely leaking and creating a need for prolonged choking. I really appreciate the fact that your GL1200 Master Carb Kit had all necessary o-rings in one comprehensive package. Just got the carbs synched this morning and took it for a spin. Wow! I have a whole new appreciation for this bike. Again, the bike runs fantastic. Thanks, and I will be spreading the word about you here in Washington state."

Another Randakk exclusive item. This kit is proprietary to Randakk's...you won't find this available anywhere else at any price. I sourced the best available parts from 3 continents and combined them with my own exclusive items to make this kit possible. This kit is appropriate for any 1984 - 1987 GL1200 with original carbs. Obviously, this kit will not service fuel injected models.
This kit has been created using the same philosophy as my industry-leading GL1000 and GL1100 Master Carb Overhaul Kits...my GL1200 Master Carb Overhaul Kit includes everything you need (and nothing you don't need!) for a comprehensive GL1200 carb overhaul.
Note: The ordinary round o-rings in each of my Master Kits are made of Viton rather than ordinary nitrile (Buna-N) as found in other aftermarket carb kits. Viton is superior to nitrile in terms of:

Only the highest quality items are included. The components in this kit have been thoroughly tested for fit and function. This collection represents the best value available in the market. Trust me, you will need everything in this kit to do a proper overhaul of your carbs.
Randakk's Master GL1200 Carb Overhaul Kit includes:
O-rings:
- 4 - fuel (idle) mixture screw (2.8 x 1.1 mm)
- 4 - float bowl drain screw (4.2 x 1.3 mm)
- 4 - large carb-to-plenum (air) O-ring (48.8 x 2.6 mm) I suppy a Viton o-ring for this instead of the special seal Honda uses. My o-ring works as well or better than Honda's odd seal
- 4 - intake manifold (35.5 x 2.6 mm)
- 4 - Main Fuel Tube (5.8 x 2.0 mm)
- 4 - Air-Cut Tube (6.9 x 1.3 mm)
- 4 - Vent Tube (6.9 x 1.3 mm)
- 1 - Special o-ring for models with secondary air supply system (goes under anti-afterburn valve - supplied in all kits...35.0 x 2.1 mm)
Gaskets - 4 of each:
- Randakk's exclusive improved float bowl gaskets.
- Slightly thicker cross section for positive sealing
- Made from high tech material to resist problems associated with oxygenated fuels
- A real "formed" gasket like OEM...not a simple o-ring like in some kits (those are hellishly difficult to use!)
Randakk Float Bowl Gasket on the left vs. hard to use "unformed" ordinary o-ring found in some kits.
Miscellaneous Parts:
- 1 Air Cutoff Valve Overhaul Kit ("slow air cut-off").
- 1 mm cotter pins for linkage - 12 supplied (simple item, but hard to find elsewhere)
- 8 special screws and lock washers rejoin carbs to the plenums. Rarely needed. These are high quality zinc-plated screws...just in case! (6 x 20 mm)
- High quality aftermarket fuel filter (one of 2 sizes depending on model of carbs)
- 4 idle mixture screw washers
- 16 float bowl screws (4 x 16 mm)
Notes:
- Unlike a few kits, I don't include any stainless hardware for the reasons discuss here.
- The diaphragm in my kit is for the air cut-off valve on the bottom of the plenum (also known as the "slow air cut-off").
- Many GL1200 carbs have a second diaphragm on the bottom of the rack. This is the anti-afterburn valve. It is a component in the secondary air supply system - an emission control system used on both 49-state and California models (CA models add an additional evaporative canister). The second diaphragm is not supplied in my kit. They rarely need replacement. If you decide that yours needs replacement, they are still available from Honda - part#17440-MG9-641.
- The separately packaged, single o-ring in my kit (35.0 x 2.1 mm) seals the "reed box" chamber to the carb plenum.
My kit includes everything you need to separate the carbs and rejoin them to the plenum.
Note: No jets or jet needles are supplied with my kits. My experience is that these can normally be cleaned and reused. Aftermarket needles are not sized as accurately as the OEM needles and may introduce lean / rich problems where none existed. Unless your needles are worn or bent, I recommend reusing them.
Also, there are no float valve/seat assemblies in my kit. Many aftermarket rebuild kits include float valve/seat assemblies of dubious quality. If you decide that you need new float valve/seat assemblies, you can buy the OEM item and not have a worry. This way you'll also get new fuel inlet screens (the plastic strainers installed below each float valve). The Honda part number is for the float valve set is 16011-MB1-671. It includes the float seat, float needle, special washer and screen. You will need to order 4 of these. Or, take a slight gamble and go with aftermarket float valve/seat assemblies which are available at reasonable cost from numerous suppliers.
I've also included the correct fuel filter to use with a GL1200 (one of 2 versions). It would be a crime to redo your carbs and not take prudent measures to ensure a pure fuel supply! While you are at it, you should replace your fuel hoses as these can sometimes disintegrate from the inside out and be a source of fuel contamination in the form of small rubber fragments. I recommend that you purchase a length of high quality 1/4" fuel injection hose locally. Don't forget to flush your fuel pump. Debris can collect here as well. GL1000 / GL1100 Air Filter Base Gasket (NOT included in GL1000 or GL1100 Master Kit)
ANOTHER RANDAKK EXCLUSIVE!!!!
This is the large rubber gasket that fits between the air filter housing and the top of the central plenum.

GL1000 / GL1100 Air Filter Base Gasket
This part has been discontinued by Honda. For reference, the Honda part number is: 17221-371-000.
My piece is a perfect reproduction. Function and appearance is virtually indistinguishable from original. Mine's actually a bit better than the original in that it's made of a somewhat stiffer material. This allows it to stay in place much better when you are attaching the air filter housing to the plenum. No adhesive is required or recommended! This item fits both GL1000 and GL1100.

GL1000 Carb-to-Plenum Special FUEL Seals (included in GL1000 Master Kit)
RANDAKK EXCLUSIVE!!!
I'll bet you probably thought you would never see these available! I have commissioned the manufacture of improved reproductions of these special carb-to-plenum fuel seals. I am the exclusive source for these special seals.

GL1000 Carb-to-Plenum Special FUEL Seals
I'm selling these in sets of four (4) of these special fuel seals as I explain below. New carb-to-plenum fuel seals are absolutely vital for a comprehensive carburetor overhaul on any 1975-1979 Honda GL 1000 GoldWing. When I do a carb overhaul on a GL1000, it takes me 6+ hours of labor to do a thorough job once the carbs are off the bike. Since I’ve done nearly a zillion of these jobs, I’m fairly efficient. It will probably take you all weekend. If you’re investing this kind of time, energy and dollars into an overhaul…don’t take shortcuts!
If you split the carbs from the central air plenum (as you should), you will positively need 4 of these seals. Your old ones will probably be 25+ years old and hard as a brick. Reusing the old ones will guarantee multiple leaks! Trust me on this.
The only way you can get these special fuel seals from Honda is to buy a complete carb overhaul kit (part number #16010-371-004). The Honda parts system nomenclature calls this a "Packing Set." Note that the "Packing Set" from Honda ONLY includes rubber parts and does not include jets, float valves and other items you will need to do a thorough carb overhaul. The Honda List price for the "Packing Set" set caps varies from $43.75 - $52.95 for each carb (US) depending on the greed factor of your local dealer. Again, you will need 4 of these packing sets just to get all 4 special carb-to-plenum fuel seals required to do one GL1000 motorcycle carb overhaul job…that’s a staggering $175.00 – $211.80 at list to get all 4!!!!!
Note: if you buy my GL1000 Master Carb Overhaul Kit, these special seals are included.
For some time. I’ve been dissatisfied with the limited alternatives to the OEM seal, so I decided to reproduce this part myself. Other than the OEM Honda item, the only substitute item I know of is merely square cut sections of Viton tubing which lack the correct density and radiused edge of the original.
Considerable R&D effort (and investment!) has gone into this project. These seals fit and function as new. They have been created using the latest injection molding techniques using superior, Bayer Texin 285 synthetic rubber. Texin 285 is impervious to gasoline and has excellent performance characteristics including critical compression factors and heat tolerance. It is ideal for this application and should outlast the originals.
My special seals have precise dimensions and similar density as the OEM item including the radiused edge on one side. When you install these, remember that the "square” side of the o-ring is oriented toward the recess in each carb body... the radiused edge is oriented toward the plenum.
My collaborator on this project is Steve Barkus of Flexible Fabrications. He does fabulous work.
No one else will sell you these special fuel seals separately. No one else offers anything matching the precise dimensions, density and correct cross-section shape of the OEM item.
These fit all 1975 - 1979 Honda GL1000 carburetors (4 required).
Remember - I'm selling these only in a set of 4 seals.
Considerable skill is required to install these high quality seals correctly. Since I can't control this important variable, there is no warranty with these. Rest assured that they are of the highest quality materials and workmanship.
If you are splitting your carbs from the plenum, you will also need my improved GL1000 plenum gasket as well as the GL1000 carb-to-plenum AIR o-rings sold separately.
