Randakk's Deluxe Electric Fuel Pump Conversion Kit with Tilt Sensing (current model has silver cad finish to match engine)

My kit includes a solid state, 12 Volt pump which is internally regulated to the correct fuel pressure without the need for a return fuel line. Very light current draw at only 1.5 amp load.

The pump I selected is a "non-certified" variation of the "FAA - Type Certified" boost pumps used in many light aircraft including Piper Cherokees. These pumps have been used for decades and are ultra reliable.

This is a "Plug and Play" installation. Simply unbolt the old pump, install the new pump assembly (same location) plug into the existing wiring harness (no harness mods required), hook up fuel lines, install the relay-controlled tilt sensor assembly (only 3 connections), turn on fuel and ignition and go. All required installation hardware is included (aircraft quality).

Extensive road testing - hundreds of thousands of miles have been racked up on these units. The pump mounts in the "normal" location but is spaced out away from the tach drive housing to protect the pump from engine heat and to allow the use of stock length fuel hoses.

You can retain your existing filter, hoses and clamps if they are in good condition, but I've included a new fuel filter, 3 new fuel hose sections and new hose clamps and recommend that you install these new items along with the pump. Since originality is of little concern in this case, I chose fuel injection style hose clamps for this kit due to their superior function.

The wiring harness for this kit is properly fused (auto spade type) and I've included a spare fuse. Each pump is pressure tested prior to shipment.

Relay-Controlled Tilt Sensor Assembly:

Over the years, I've evaluated dozens of designs to accomplish tilt sensing and rejected them all for one reason or another. Now, I am pleased to offer this superior solution created by my friend and master fabricator Dennis Miller. It is a sophisticated yet elegantly simple design that overcomes all of my past reservations. No oil pressure monitoring is required, nor is the "prime" feature lost as on many designs.

  • This device uses a 12 volt DC relay and a pair of siamesed tilt switches to control the ground circuit of Randakk Cycle Shakk's 12 volt DC electric fuel pump conversion for Honda GL1000 / GL1100.
  • The 12 volt relay, when energized, provides a circuit to ground for the fuel pump. The ignition switch will turn the fuel pump on and off so long as the kill switch is on and the bike is in an upright position.
  • With the ignition on, the kill switch can be used to de-energize the relay to open the pump ground. When the kill switch is moved to "off," the fuel pump will be turned off. This feature is useful for certain maintenance procedures when you want the ignition on, but don't want the fuel pump to run.
  • Tilt sensing is provided via a pair of proprietary switches that are sealed and embedded into the base of the relay socket. When the relay assembly is properly mounted on the motorcycle in a vertical position, the tilt switches allow a ground circuit for the relay coil, which energizes when the motorcycle is upright and both the ignition key and the kill switch are on. When the bike is tilted over about 45 degrees, either left or right and not in motion, one of the tilt switches will break contact, and the ground circuit for the relay opens. This de-energizes the relay, which effectively breaks the pump ground circuit, and cuts off the pump. This feature is useful in a "tip-over" or accident situation.
  • The design accommodates normal banking and cornering forces. Cornering will not deactivate the fuel pump…even at severe angles of lean.

Advantages:

  • Available! The Honda part is frequently "out of stock."
  • Unlike the OEM Honda mechanical pump, this electric pump has no diaphragm to wear out or leak.
  • Aircraft type "block" pump is very simple and ultra reliable.
  • This pump will solve one of the age-old problems on GL1000s - hard starting after short layups due to fuel evaporation in the float bowls. See this Tech Tip. With this conversion, starting after short lay-ups is instant...no grinding to refill the fuel bowls. You'll still need to run Stabil in the fuel to protect against long-tern fuel deterioration which is an entirely different fuel issue.
  • Fuel pressure is more evenly regulated with this pump compared to the OEM pump. This is especially important in low rpm running. I find that this pump improves idle quality noticeably by eliminating fuel pressure surges which can disrupt the very sensitive idle performance on these bikes.
  • This pump includes an advanced anti-siphon valve which is an important safeguard against flooding and hydro-lock when the bike is parked. You should still close the petcock whenever the engine is shut down no matter how briefly...that's why the petcock is there!
  • This conversion is not suitable for show bikes for obvious reasons. For most daily riders, you will appreciate the improved performance and reliability it delivers.

Important Notes:

1. This electric fuel pump conversion kit will not cure any preexisting carb problems such as internally leaking, flooding or leaking carbs - you will need perfectly operating floats and float valves. This pump will not fix such internal carb problems and might actually make these problems appear worse. However, if you have a leaking or worn-out mechanical fuel pump, this is an excellent solution.

2. Six pages of detailed instructions with color photos included for the pump install + ten pages of detailed instructions with color photos for tilt sensor assembly install.

3. This pump is intended for off-road use only.

4. Considerable skill is required to install this high quality kit correctly. Do not order if you have doubts about your abilities in this regard.

5. It is imperative that you install the provided filter and that you have a clean fuel supply. The internal clearances in these pumps are very small and these magnetic pumps can be "jammed" by debris in the fuel if the fuel filter is overwhelmed by dirty fuel.

6. This pump is not for use on any GoldWing with factory fuel injection.

It is a sophisticated yet elegantly simple design that overcomes all of my past reservations. No oil pressure monitoring is required, nor is the "prime" feature lost as on many designs.

Relay-Controlled Tilt Sensor Assembly:

  • This device uses a 12 volt DC relay and a pair of siamesed tilt switches to control the ground circuit of Randakk Cycle Shakk's 12 volt DC electric fuel pump conversion for Honda GL1000 / GL1100.
