Float Pivot Post Repair Kit

One of the worst things that can happen during a carb rebuild is a broken float pivot post. I cover some simple precautions in my GL1000 Carb Rebuild DVD, but even the most careful mechanic can sometimes break one of these posts...even me.

Over the years, I've evaluated many repair techniques for this calamity...none has ever completely satisfied me. Up until now, the only good advice I could offer was to replace the entire carb body.

Recently, Gary Broom contacted me with details on a promising repair based on machined 1/4" aluminum stock. I was able to duplicate Gary's method with good success. I considered writing a Tech Tip based on Gary's technique. But, Gary's method required considerable machinist skill and access to a drill press, end mill and various dies and taps (including a "blind" hole tap). Upon reflection, I felt it would be difficult for most owners to duplicate Gary's method with acceptable accuracy.

Meanwhile, my good friend Bob Hagerman (supplier of my oil filter conversion kits) was solving essentially the same problem in a "parallel universe." At my 2008 Rally, Bob and I compared notes and worked on several refinements. This kit is the result of our collaboration.

This repair kit is easy to use, and requires mimimal expertise or tools. It delivers a reliable, acccurate and permanent repair! The cost is considerably less than most suppliers charge for a single, bare and inspected carb body. Plus, given the cost of labor and the value of a complete carb rack, most suppliers are getting reluctant to part with a single carb body. Thanks again to Gary Broom for sending me down this path.

Each kit will repair one broken float pivot post. Once you've purchased the kit, you can repair more carb bodies by purchasing addtional replacement posts below.

Float Pivot Post Repair Kits: GL1000 Kit on left, DOHC-4 Kit on right (CBX and GL1100 similar)

Each repair kit contains the following parts:

• 1 - replacement post
• 1 - post locating jig
• 2 - specially sized twist drills
• 1 - self-tapping screw
• 1 - drill depth gauge (plastic tube)
• 1 - special saw blade
• miscellaneous items unique to each kit 

You Provide:

• 6-inch fine file
• small electric drill  with small chuck for 1/16  twist drill (or drill press)
• Phillips screwdriver
• Epoxy glue

Notes:

1. The supplied replacement post is a long post. It is engineered to replace either the short or long OEM post.
2. The GL1000 repair kit will also work with Honda Civic SB1 - RS automobiles with dual GL1000-type CV carbs (carb code 743A).

Detailed Installation Instructions

 

Here is an excerpt:

Step 4.

"Install drill locator jig. It works for either broken post and is engineered so that it can only be installed in the "correct" orientation. The jig is attached using the original float bowl screws, with the provided flat washers under the lock washers on the screws. The purpose of the flat washers is to prevent the ends of the lock washers from getting into the slots and possibly shifting the jig out of position. When tightening the screws, be sure to push the jig so the flat side of the notch bears against the good post. This ensures proper location of the new hole."
