Primary Mission Statement of this Randakk's judged Concours d'Elegance event:

The purpose of this event is to promote the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of vintage motorcycles defined for this event as Honda GL1000, GL1100, GL1200, CBX and CX500.

With this Mission spirit in mind, a new feature at this year's Randakk's International Customer Appreciation Rally at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, will be a Concours d'Elegance. The Concours will be for original and authentically restored motorcycles of the years that the above motorcycles were produced by Honda.

The Concours will be a "Level of Merit" program, based on objective criteria. Motorcycles are to be judged systematically against these objective standards, and not against each other. That is, there will not be a "1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place" style ranking in the Concours d'Elegance event. All motorcycles entered can win awards commensurate with the extent they are in superb original condition, or have been authentically restored to a condition that correctly replicates the appearance of the machine when it was on the dealer's showroom floor.

There will be three levels of awards based on the number of points attained: Tyro, Masterful, and Exquisite. The minimum scores required to attain each level are:

  • Tyro: 85 Points
  • Masterful: 90 Points
  • Exquisite: 98 Points

For Randakk's Concours d'Elegance continuing programs, a motorcycle can only win each level of award once. Example: A level of Tyro is attained at Cumberland Gap. The same machine in order to win must attain the next level or higher at future Randakk's Concours Events. Once a motorcycle has achieved an Exquisite award, it is ineligible for further judging, but may be displayed in subsequent events in the "Preservation Hall" event display area as guidance and inspiration to other motorcycle owners.

The judging program will be the typical "Concours" type using the 100 point system. Each motorcycle entered for judging will start with 100 Points, and will be judged in 20 distinct areas, called "Considerations", which are set forth on the Judging Form. Deductions will be made for each deficiency noted in each area of consideration. A maximum deduction of 5 Points may be taken in each area of consideration.

There will be two judging classes: Original and Restored, and there will be no overlap between the classes.

The standard for Original Class shall be the strictest possible adherence to, and maintenance of, the original condition of the motorcycle. To be judged in the Original Class, the motorcycle must be completely original; allowable exceptions shall be tires, which must be of the correct size, and emulate the original tread pattern as closely as possible and maintenance items such as spark plugs, points, etc. Original bikes are expected to have minor nicks and scratches associated with normal usage commensurate with mileage. Original bikes are expected to be clean. Points will be deducted for visible dirt or corrosion, or other signs of long-term neglect that should have been seen and removed. Cleaning, and polishing bright work to whatever extent is possible is permitted and expected. However, repainting or re-plating will not be allowed. The finish or condition of parts added to an Original bike should show the same degree of wear/weathering as the rest of the motorcycle. For example, a badly rusted out muffler may be replaced with a similar original part with less deterioration, but not a NOS or new reproduction unit.

The standard for the Restored Class is authenticity. The goal of a good restoration is to replicate, as authentically as possible, the appearance of the motorcycle as it was on the dealer's floor. This includes color of paint, condition of the bright work, and overall level of workmanship. A restored motorcycle may be painted any authentic color in which the bike was available from the manufacturer in the year in which it was produced. All restored motorcycles should exhibit the "Showroom Fresh" look of a new machine. The fact that a bike may be an older restoration does not count for anything. Chipped or dull paint, or deteriorated plating will be scored accordingly. Further, any high-visibility damage i.e.; dented tanks, fenders, headlights, etc., can be grounds for disqualification. The only exception is exhaust pipe bluing/yellowing, which can occur on a fresh restoration as well as an older one. Parts and other items of equipment which are no longer obtainable (such as mufflers) may be substituted with accurately reproduced parts which are indistinguishable from the factory originals. However, the Randakk's Rally Concours does not support "Over-Restoration"; for example, highly polished carburetor bodies or engine crankcase covers where the original finish was rough or matte. Likewise with high-gloss urethane or clear-coated paint presenting an unnaturally-high level of brightness unless that finish was supplied on the bike "as new". Randakk's will furnish an example of an Original GL1000 for viewing and comparison.

General Rules:

  1. All motorcycles submitted for judging must be able to be started, irrespective of class.
  2. Entrants must demonstrate to the judge that the bikes engine can be started prior to a judging form being made for that bike.
  3. Motorcycles entered in either Class are expected to be clean and properly maintained. In the case of a bike which was ridden to the event, it should only show signs of that one journey and that an effort was made to prepare it for the event.
  4. Period accessories, such as luggage racks and "crash" bars will not add to or subtract from an entrant's score, unless they detract from the authenticity of the machine as it represents the year and model.
  5. Judges will accept factory printed proof (such as sales brochures) of authenticity.

A copy of the completed judging form will be provided to the owner at the conclusion of the judging. Entrants should understand that the point deductions and the comments relating thereto are not to be considered "criticism", but rather guidance as to what needs to be done to the bike in order for it to win an award, better represent an original machine or to progress to the next award level.

The intent of the 2008 Randakk's Cumberland Gap Rally, and future Randakk's Concours d'Elegance programs is not to degrade anyone's bike, but rather to acknowledge those motorcycles which best represent their "showroom fresh" condition, and preserve them for the admiration of future generations.

Qualification to enter Randakk's "Concours d'Elegance:"

  1. The maximum number of bikes in this event will be limited to no more than 20...regardless of class or model. Prospective entrants are advised to apply for admission as early as possible.
  2. You must be registered to attend the Rally

Interested parties are asked to submit an Application for Admission into the event. Submissions must include:

  1. Brief description of bike, model, year, serial number and history.
  2. Class designation: Original or Restored?
  3. 10 pictures (max) of the bike in JPEG format (only).
  4. Limit each picture sent to 100K max. file size each.

The Rally organizers do not want to turn anyone away who wishes to enter the Concours, but thoughtful judging of such an event is quite time-consuming. 20 entrants is deemed a feasible number for the first year of this event.
