Service: Here I showcase investment grade GL1000s and
other worthy vintage bikes for sale by myself, customers and other
third parties. If I do not own these bikes, I am very familiar
with their pedigree. I maintain a strict "no junk" policy
and carefully screen for authenticity, condition and desirability.
Only collectible or otherwise high value specimens will be listed.
Note:
When I become aware of collector quality bike that is fairly represented
and the owner seeks my assistance in marketing that bike, I will
send out an information "blast" to potentially interested parties
that I maintain on my GL1000 Collector Watch List
before I post the bike to this page. Many of these bikes never
make it to this page before a transaction occurs. The Watch
List is maintained to provide advance notice to a very
select list of savvy collectors and other interested parties.

Note:
At the risk of sounding egotistical, here's a fact. Bikes that
I've wrenched on routinely sell for significant premiums. Word
to the wise…I'm aware of one recent transaction involving a bike
where the seller claimed my personal involvement. This was not
the case! Demand proper documentation from sellers who reference
me in any way. Please feel contact me to verify claims of this

Note:
This bike was originally delivered to a collector in Ohio
on 1/8/2004 after a comprehensive, ground-up restoration by me
in my shop. I bought it back and resold it to David McGuire in
2006. See below for documentation on the extensive restoration
on this bike.
This
special bike took second place overall in the Japanese class at
the 2004 AMA Mid-Ohio Vintage Days Bike Show (lost
out to a '73 Kawasaki with 100 miles!). Many consider this the
top vintage bike show in the country. In 2005, the owner was invited
to show this bike at the prestigious Eyes on Design
car show in Detroit. This is a premier auto design concours with
multi-million dollar cars and the auto industry's top design awards
ceremony. The owner was referred to Eyes on Design
by the folks at AMA.
Current
Mileage: Approximately 24,911 miles as of 2/15/2008

Here
is my original description of the restoration work done in 2003:
Note
dated 12/14/03: This bike is finished and slated
for delivery to the new owner in early January, 2004. Now that
I've been test riding this bike, I'm pleased to report that
this is as close to a "new" GL1000 as I've every ridden.
Because I've replaced all the suspension bushings, bearings,
etc., there is no "lost motion" at all in this bike.
That plus the new Hagon rear shocks make it a joy to ride. The
engine turned out especially sweet. Compression readings turned
out 165#-170# on all 4 cylinders...practically the test results
you'd expect for a new engine. When I replaced the valve stem
seals (not really necessary as the old seals were quite pliable),
I was pleased to find there was no discernible wear in the top
end components. The primary chain is very quiet and the transmission
shifts as new. I really hate to part with this bike!
Rare
opportunity to buy a true, top-drawer investment grade GL1000.
This bike represents the culmination of everything I know about
GL1000 restoration. When finished, this bike will be one of
the finest GL1000s available in the world. A low mileage, unmolested
first year bike undergoing a comprehensive, frame-up restoration.
I'm certain that this bike will surpass my personal show bike
"Elsie" in overall quality. Reason for selling: I don't need
another show bike. This one will be too "perfect" for me to
really enjoy riding. Also, this will probably be my last full
restoration. Going forward, I plan to concentrate on other aspects
of my business. Unfortunately, restorations are not profitable
given the time and effort required. If you'd like to own one
of my restorations, this may be your last opportunity. This
bike has an obscene number of new parts which has wrecked the
economics for me. If I'm persuaded to do another restoration
in the future, the price will be at least $10K for a bike done
to this standard.
This
bike will be the beneficiary of an extensive list of impossible
to obtain parts I have hoarded specifically for this project.
Many of these items are no longer available from Honda. These
include:
- Mint
wheel set...less than 200 mikes (stored since 1977)!

Restoration
Build-up Photos:

One
of the best features of this bike is the beautiful Candy Antares
Red bodywork. This bike includes the one of the best original
set of body panels I've seen in a long time. I've carefully
used Griot's clay, Griot's Speed Shine and some special, secret
wax I use to bring the panels into top show condition. The original
top lid was slightly faded and the crotch piece had some flaws,
so I've replaced these two pieces with matching NOS (top lid)
and new OEM (crotch piece) items. Also, the left radiator "fin"
had some minor flaws so I replaced it with another mint used
fin I had. The top shelter side doors are '76 design with tri-color
lower pinstipe.
Having
original panels with insignificant imperfections and patina
appropriate to a well-cared for specimen (instead of perfectly
repainted panels) is always preferable on a show bike. I've
also installed all new top shelter emblems along with new side
cover latch hardware. The authenticity and provenance detailed
here makes a big difference to show judges. The value of this
great set of bodywork alone is approximately $1000 (if you could
find such a set). The frame paintwork is in good original condition,
but I've decided to re-paint it anyway.
Take
a look at the Restoration section of my web site for a general
indication of the extensive work I plan to do on this bike click

as new…actually a bit better given the carb mods I make!

For Sale: Stunning 1975 GL1000
Sorry...this
bike sold as of 09/10/04
This
exceptional bike GL1000 is for sale by one of my customers - Ken
Kelly. Ken purchased this bike from me in 2002. This bike received
a very thorough restoration prior to Ken's purchase. Correct,
comprehensive frame-off mechanical rejuvenation with thorough
cosmetic restoration.

This
bike performs and looks fabulous and will be a threat to win show
trophies on the local level. Compares favorably with true investment
grade "garage queen" show bikes that typically sell in the $6,000-$7,000
range. The finished bike is stunning. It's a great specimen of
a watershed design. At this price point, most of your investment
could be recovered if you decided to sell and you have the added
benefit of owning a bike you can actually ride and enjoy. Compare
this level of investment with anything available new and you have
a very compelling case.
Ken
has accumulated approximately 5,000 troublefree miles since he
purchased this bike. In April 2004, the bike had a complete major
service. A new battery amd fork seals were installed at that time

This
is a great-looking bike…digital pictures hardly do it justice.
But, in the interest of full-disclosure and to prevent any surprises
(I am a bit of a perfectionist) here are the…
Known
Cosmetic Flaws:
- Paint
is fabulous but just short of the standard of excellence I put
on true show bikes. Main difference is the graphics. This set
of body work has professionally applied auto-type pinstripes
that don't quite match the original tricolor air foil design.
Also, the painter on this set used '77 panels to guide his graphics
installation, so the layout is slightly different from a '75.
Instead
of side cover decals, the painter talked me into '78 style GL1000
emblems. These look wonderful, but again they are not original
(by the way, I no longer use this painter - I'm tired of arguing
with him over what's "correct").
- Seat
is in great overall condition, but has minor imperfections on
the lower edge where the fabric wraps around the seat pan. Fabric
is still very pliable. Good "Honda" emblem on tail.
- Original
toolkit and owner's manual are missing.
- Front
master reservoir is weathered.
- Speedo
and Tach faces are slightly faded, but there is no cracking
- Finish
on rear rim is slightly tired.
Other
Known Flaws:
- Like
all early Gold Wings, this bikes occasionally smokes a little
on start-up…esp. if left on the side stand…does not use oil.
- Carb
rack is from a '76 bike…functionally identical except for fancier
chrome side brackets.
- Turn
signal "audiblizer" is missing (I don't miss it!)
Other

For Sale: 1976 GL1000 - My Personal Show Bike "Elsie"...World's
Fastest "Stock" GL1000?
Sorry...this
bike sold as of 01/09/04

Rare
opportunity to own one of my last GL1000 restorations. This is
one of my personal bikes...my '76 show bike "Elsie." I'm not doing
any more restorations for the foreseeable future. I recently sold
a '75 restoration to a collector in Ohio for $7,250 and this bike
is nicer in some ways. The quality of this bike is exceptional
Modesty
is a character "flaw" I overcame years ago. It's not a stretch
to say that I one of the world's leading authorities on the early
Honda GL1000. I have earned some notoriety as a GL1000 tuning
"guru." For what it's worth, I am a certified motorcycle mechanic
who has concentrated on the GL1000.
This is a true, top-drawer investment grade GL1000. This bike
represents the culmination of everything I know about GL1000 restoration.
Without question one of the finest GL1000s available in the world.
This bike is not "restored" in the normal sense of that word...just
an excellent specimen in peak show-winning condition. In fact,
this bike has never been beaten in competition.
This
bike has approximately 32,000 actual miles. Reason for selling:
I have other bikes to ride and this one's too "perfect" for me
to really enjoy riding a great deal. I recently turned down a
legitimate offer of $7000 for this bike from a European collector.
I declined his offer mainly because of the hassle factor involved
in international transactions. So - this sale is limited to US
buyers who will make all necessary arrangements to pick up the
bike from my premises. I cannot crate or ship this bike.
I purchased this bike in excellent condition from a motorcycle
collector in Texas about 3 years ago. Obviously, my starting point
was an exceptional motorcycle. Since I've owned the bike, I've
done the following:
This bike has a new, show-winning paint job with all new graphics.
Correctly done with House of Kolor 4 part process (primer, base
metallic, base color + clear) with extensive polishing between
layers. Graphics are correctly applied under clear coat. I employed
a subtle "trick" with this paint job. Rather than use the normal
fine metallic silver base layer, I used a fine metallic gold base
layer instead. This makes the final result a bit "warmer" and
more dazzling than OEM. The quality of this paint job is far superior
to the original factory standard. The color is "correct" (even
beside NOS panels) but the gold metallic base makes it look irresistibly
"showier." The paint job was so expensive I get queasy just thinking
about it! The painter's work has won numerous national awards
for quality, but he won't do any more work for me, because doing
paint to my standards is very difficult.
Comprehensive service per Honda workshop manual…including all
fluids, timing set ("split-timing" technique), carb synchronization,
etc., etc.
Maintenance /Restoration:
Speedometer,
tachometer and fuel gauge professionally serviced and faces refinished
(bezel rings not cut!)
Thorough carb overhaul by me (with "off idle" fix for better performance,
+ my own special proprietary tweaks)
New cam belts
New battery
Rebuilt front and rear brake calipers...front caliper pistons
are new
Calipers re-finished with high temp caliper paint. Correct red
"dots" applied to calipers
Both master cylinders overhauled
New brake hoses front and rear (rear hose no longer available
from Honda) using new crush washers
New front master brake fluid reservoir (no longer available from
Honda)
Swing arm removed, cleaned, repainted and re-greased...new driveshalft
circlips
New radiator hoses, clamps and radiator cap
Petcock overhauled
New fuel filter, correct OEM hoses and clamps
New air filter
New tires, tubes and rim strips
New spark plugs and caps
New condenser
New breaker points
New OEM coils / ignition wire assembly (no longer available from
Honda)
Professionally polished valve covers, timing belt covers, carb
tops, intakes and fork "sliders"
I
installed a boatload of new OEM and NOS parts rounded up from
5 different countries. Most of these parts were replaced for purely
cosmetic reasons:
New
tank emblems
New side cover latch hardware
New battery retention strap
New voltage regulator
New reserve lighting unit
New turn signal flasher
New turn "beeper"
New rear stop light switch and spring
New emergency kickstart lever, both rubber pieces and retention
strap (strap no longer available from Honda)
New turn signals
New front fender (no longer available from Honda)
New front wheel " New valve cover emblems (correct blue background,
no longer available from Honda)
New fork seals
New OEM Honda handlebar(no longer available from Honda)
New handlebar grips
Many new frame decals
New clutch, choke and throttle cables
New clutch and brake levers
New speedo cable
New tach cable
New centerstand spring
New footpeg hardware
New swingarm pivot bolt covers (no longer available from Honda)
New OEM rear shock absorber / spring assemblies
Many new, correct OEM fasteners
As purchased by me, this bike had many hard to find or replace
items:
Good original muffler (no longer available from Honda)
Good chrome muffler heat shields
Mirrors are in excellent condition (correct "long-stem" version)
Grab bar is excellent (no longer available from Honda)
Keys match all 4 locks
Plus many, many small details that only a show judge would appreciate
Performance
Mods:
Elsie
has served as a test bed for the development of numerous tuning
enhancements that I've developed for the early GL1000. Although
completely stock in appearance, this is probably the fastest "stock-appearing"
GL1000 on the planet. No, I haven't added a turbo or blower to
make this happen. I haven't bolted on any (obvious) aftermarket
parts. It still uses the original carbs, it has OEM coils and
it still has breaker points. Nor have I hack-sawed on the air
cleaner housing or done any other senseless butchery.
My mods are "old school" and stone simple. These modifications
are proprietary, but I can tell you that I've made important changes
to the carburetion, ignition, intake and exhaust. Please don't
ask for more details on these mods. None of these changes have
had an adverse effect on reliability, serviceability or "drivability."
In fact, this bike has a very sweet disposition. One hint to the
changes...the idle is slightly lumpier than normal.
Other:
Elsie is not a garage queen. Weather permitting, she is ridden
weekly to keep her in peak form. There are no undesirable options
installed like bags, crash bars, screens, etc. ( I do have a nearly
new National Cycle Plexi-2 detachable windshield for this bike
which I will make available to the buyer for an additional $50
if desired).
She has a very small digital voltmeter mounted beneath the speedo
which I will remove if you like (wiring harness was not altered
in any way to mount the voltmeter).
Also, she has a period-correct fork brace which really sharpens
up the handling in high speed corners. I can remove this if you
like.
Currently, this bike has a new leather Corbin "Dual Touring" seat
as seen in some of the pictures on this web site. This is a very
special seat. I collaborated with Corbin to modify their original
Dual Touring Design introduced in 2002 to meet my needs. Mainly,
I had them re-shape the nose of the seat to allow both top shelter
doors to open without the need to remove the seat...necessary
in my opinion for routine maintenance checks. This is the best
seat I've ever ridden on any bike in over 35 years of riding!
If you visit my web site, you may see a few pictures of this seat
with Corbin's latest design oval backrest installed. This backrest
is NOT included in this auction...I use this backrest on another
bike. I would be happy to deduct $250 from the winning bid if
the buyer will let me keep this wonderful seat.
For shows, you will need a stock seat. I don't have an appropriate
stock seat at the moment, but I can point you to some good sources
if you're interested.
Owner's manual (re-print) and new OEM toolkit are included. Clear
North Carolina Title with no liens.
Here are the only material "flaws:"
1.
The "stinger" baffles have been removed from the chrome muffler
extensions for a slightly more mellow sound and a bit less back
pressure. It would take a very astute show judge to notice. The
muffler has also had an insignificant (and well done) welding
repair on the underside.
2. Like all early GoldWings, this one will occasionally smoke
a bit at start-up...especially if left on the sidestand. Not a
flaw really but a design characteristic. The bike does NOT consume
oil and the engine has excellent compression on all 4 cylinders.
The bike is in a razor sharp state of tune.
4. Like all '75-'77 GoldWings, the primary chain is a bit noisy
because Honda elected to omit any sort of tensioning mechanism
to adjust the slack. Not a flaw really but a design characteristic.
This is only noticeable at idle. It is less noticeable when the
carbs are well-synced as they are now. Should be good for another
75-100K miles before the chain needs replacement. Not a flaw really
but a design characteristic.
5. The chrome finish on the original rear fender is slightly tired.
The underside of the rear fender has been sprayed with dull aluminum
paint to mimic the original factory finish which is very prone
to deterioration. Most show judges don't notice, but I would send
the rear fender out for re-chroming if I were to enter this bike
in another show.
6. Rear wheel looks fine, but it is the original with wear and
tear appropriate for its mileage.
7.
Trip odometer works, but occasionally the "hundreds" digit has
a mind of its own.
All information detailed above is accurate to the best of my knowledge
and every attempt has been made to give an accurate description
Inadvertent omissions, oversights, etc. can occur - so, the vehicle
is sold without warranty. It is sold "as is" and "where is."
Finally,
the current battery is nearly 3 years old and giving no problems
(I vigilantly use a battery maintainer). However, I will install
a fresh battery prior to transfer for the buyer since the current
one is nearing the end of its probable useful life.
