The GL1000’s mechanical nature is part of what makes it, and other classic Japanese motorcycles, great. Unlike modern two-wheeled machines, you don’t need a computer interface to work on them. Your Gold Wings breaker points must be cleaned regularly, and their contacts timed. Condensors must be replaced periodically, as well. Electronic ignitions require no such maintenance. If your GL’s spark plugs are in good condition, you’re good to go.
