Honda GL1200

The 1983 model year had Honda fighting for market share in the niche it had created a decade earlier. The other Big Four companies had entered the touring market, and Honda had to put up or shut up. Its answer: the GL1200.

One place its competitors had chosen to attack the Gold Wing was in the engine size arena, and Honda’s new 1182cc engine, still a SOHC horizontally-opposed four banger, instantly matched or bettered anything in the class. The bump in displacement improved claimed horsepower from 85 to 97, and added 12 pound-feet to the Gold Wing’s already prodigious torque. Roll-on power was smooth and linear even at the lowest RPM.

Honda kept the model lineup from the previous seasons, with customers choosing from the unfaired Standard, the dressed Interstate and the decked out Aspencade. The GL1200 featured a beefed-up frame to handle the extra heft, as well as hydraulic valve adjusters to practically eliminate maintenance. Honda went back up to 32mm carburetors on its newest Gold Wings, which provided ample fueling without a fuel pump.

What had at first seemed like an odd decision — shrinking the front wheel to 16 inches — made perfect sense to anyone who rode one of the new Gold Wings. The GL1200’s steering was light and sharp, especially for a 700-pound motorcycle. The linked brakes and air-assisted suspension saw welcome improvement, and a hydraulic clutch was now standard. The controls all worked seamlessly together, in true Honda fashion.

1984 was the naked GL1200’s swan song. The Gold Wing name had become synonymous with heavily fared touring bikes, and the world had passed the original GL by. To take its place, Honda produced the Gold Wing LTD in 1985. The LTD featured thoroughly modern computerized fuel injection and trip meter, self-leveling rear suspension, and Dolby four-speaker AM/FM cassette sound system.

Honda released a repainted version of the LTD, dubbed the SE-I, in 1986. But by then, the GL1200 had served its purpose. Big Red had big changes in store. It was a golden age for the Gold Wing.
