Typically, 5 or more clutch springs are used in motorcycle clutch set ups. Clutch springs hold the clutch plates together using tension. This tension keeps the plates from slipping while in gear. Once the clutch lever is engaged, the clutch springs release the tension they have on the plates, which allows for a gear change.
